The Founder Note

Why I Stopped Avoiding The Books

For years, the financial side of my business was a source of quiet, constant anxiety. I was pouring my heart into the work, yet completely ignoring the numbers because the learning curve felt insurmountable.

I remember the distinct panic of applying for a grant and scrambling to put together a P&L at the eleventh hour. It wasn't just stressful—it was a wake-up call. I realized that avoiding the books wasn't protecting my peace; it was jeopardizing the business I had worked so hard to build.

That’s why I created Simple Business Bookkeeping. Not because I’ve always loved spreadsheets, but because I know exactly how it feels to be on the other side of them. You deserve to focus on your craft, knowing your foundation is secure.

I also bring 20 years of law enforcement experience to this work, where honesty, integrity, discretion, and doing things by the book weren't optional; they were the job. That same standard now shows up in how I handle your numbers: with objectivity, professionalism, and complete confidentiality. You're trusting me with sensitive information about your business, and I don't take that lightly

Questions (FAQ's)

Q: What exactly does a bookkeeper do, and how is that different from a CPA?

A bookkeeper handles the ongoing financial tracking for your business, entering transactions, categorizing expenses, and reconciling accounts so your books stay clean and accurate. A CPA typically handles tax preparation and filing, relying on the work your bookkeeper does to file accurate returns.

In short: I keep your records organized and usable day-to-day; your CPA uses those records at tax time. Most small businesses need both, but I'm often the one you'll talk to more regularly.

Q: Do I really need bookkeeping if I'm just starting out or not making much money yet?

Yes, especially if you're just starting out. No matter your size, you need to know what's coming in, what's going out, and whether your business is actually sustainable. Getting organized early means you're not guessing at tax time or wondering where your money went once things pick up. You don't have to be making six figures to treat your business like it matters.

Q: What's included in your bookkeeping service? Do you do cleanup or catch-up work? Do you work remotely?

Yes, yes, and yes. Monthly bookkeeping includes recording and categorizing your income and expenses, reconciling your bank and credit card accounts, and monthly reports that actually make sense. If your books haven't been touched in months (or longer), catch-up and cleanup services are available too, no shame, just step-by-step progress. And you don't need to be local, everything's handled virtually and securely through QuickBooks Online, wherever you are.

Q: Can bookkeeping help me understand whether my business is actually profitable?

Yes. When your books are current and accurate, you can see real patterns instead of guessing, what's coming in, what's going out, and whether you're actually making money or just staying busy. Clean books turn "I think I'm doing okay" into "I know exactly where I stand.

Q: What if I already tried doing my own books and made a mess?

That's incredibly common, and nothing to be embarrassed about. Cleanup and catch-up work is a normal part of what I do, we'll get things sorted out without judgment.

Q: How often will I hear from you, and how do we communicate?

That's really up to you. Most clients receive monthly reconciliation and reports at the end of each month, but if quarterly works better for your business, we can set that up instead. As for communication, whatever you're most comfortable with works for me, phone, email, or even face-to-face on Zoom. My goal is to fit into how you actually run your business, not force you into a system that feels impersonal..

Q: Can I switch from another bookkeeper or software to you?

Yes, absolutely. If you're currently using a different bookkeeper or accounting software, I can help you transition smoothly into QuickBooks Online, which is the platform I work in. If you don't already have a QuickBooks Online account, no problem, I'll help you get set up, and as a transition incentive, you'll receive 50% off your first 3 months while we get everything organized in your new system.
